Yazd Solar Thermal Power Plant - IPDC
Objective:
Implementation of the first Parabolic Trough Integrated Solar Combined Cycle System in Iran.
Project Description:
The feasibility study of Integrated Solar Combined
Cycle System ( I.S.C.C.S) has been performed by
multinational consulting consortium led by the German
company named Fichtner and with the participation
of Pilkington Solar   from   Germany and   Electric
Research Center of Iran (Niroo).
According to a feasibility study, Yazd Province, due to
good solar resources has been selected for implemention of this project.
Also the Integrated Solar Combined Cycle System was
the technology which among other solar thermal
configurations has been selected for this power plant.
In order to achieve this goal we are in the process of
performing the following activities:
  • Preparation of general and technical specification.
  • Preparation of Tender document
  • Preparation of Construction bid package
  • Request for quotations
  • Evaluation of quotes and EPC contract negotiations
  • Engineering
  • Procurement
  • Construction
  • Commissioning
TECHNOLOGYCAL DESCRIPTION
Parabolic Trough Technology
The Solar field is comprised of parabolic trough mirrors
and is connected to a natural gas combined cycle power
plant. The option selected was to use two gas turbine
units of 123.4 MW (ISO condition), a waste heat
recovery steam generator and a steam of 198 MW for
a total installed power of 414 MW.
Total net electric power is 2917 GWhe.
The Solar field is formed by LS-3 by LS-3 parabolic tough collectors ordered in 84 loops, the solar radiation is about 2515 kwh/m2 and thermal energy from solar field is almost 470 Gwh.
The Solar field has been optimized to fulfil the plant requirements and to give solar a contribution of around %5.3 .
The total area occupied would be around 366,240 m2
and the installed power of the solar field would be 67 MW
and
using the auxiliary firing for a total 1200 hours per year. The type of boiler for this system is HRSG
while the condensation cooling will be achieved by indirect natural draft cooling tower with Heller system.

Project financing:

On a feasibility study basis, it is estimated that the
local cost of the project will be about US$ 320 million of which about US$ 67 million has been allocated by the Iranian Government for gas turbines and preparation of the site.
In the meantime no grant has been provided under

GEFoperational programs 6 & 7 that deals with the
reduction of the long term costs of low greenhouse
-gas emitting technology.
We are negotiating for financial support as soon as
our request for grant has been accepted by GEF
we will sign EPC contract.

Project Implementation
Several activities have been undertaken in relevan
ce to
the prepartion of the prop
osed project.  In the period
1996-2001 a consortium of three companies Pilkington,
Fichtner and Matn (power research center of Iran)
prepared for IPDC a feasibility study (financial and technical feasibility) for possible plant
configuration ranging from 215 MW (two gas turbine
unit ) to 444 MW located in Yazd.
The installation of two gas turbine units (Frame 9E PG9171 E,ISO ratins of 123.4MW) have been completed
as the first phase of an integrated solar combined cycle
system.
At the moment our Consultant as well as our designer Moshanir Power Engineering Consultant is performing the following activities.
  • Concept design
  • General Specification
  • Detail specification - solar field
